Rat's nightmare

Description

A random little doodle inspired by a conversation I had with :iconkemyntari: about a super-cute little rat I fell in love with at the pet store last night. I give him maybe two days before he's somebody's dinner :( but I've already got a rat, so I couldn't take him. Wouldn't be fair to my baby. Don't get me wrong, I've got nothing against snake owners (snakes have to eat too) I just wish people didn't feed them rats. Go with hamsters or something. (Sorry to all those hamster owners, but you really should get a rat instead  Much cuter, much sweeter) Sooo, SAVE THE RATS!!!

***EDIT: okay, I painted this absolutely forever ago, but I keep getting comments about keeping rats in pairs, so I'll Clarify! Rats absolutely should be kept in pairs or groups, so if you're getting some, get two (same sex, obviously!)- they play and cuddle together and it's really cute! I had a couple of rats at various points who I kept separately, even after I learned that they should be in pairs )one who was very sickly from the start and terrified of other rats, and one who was both extremely rat-aggressive and enormous, adopted from a biology lab) so I must have had one of those when I did this picture!!

Old deviation is old, but the topic still stands.

People don't just feed rats to snakes. They also feed gerbils, hamsters, chicks, multi mice, rabbits, Guinea pigs, lizards, other snakes... you name it. It all depends on the size and growth rate of the individual snake -- so it's not always rats by default. Baby snakes take pinkie mice or fish, for example, whereas larger snakes such as retics would take rabbits in their adult stage. Rats just happen to be the best size animals for a lot of snakes out there.

More people are feeding frozen thawed now as it reduces suffering for the prey and eliminates chance of injury for the snake. I personally use frozen mice at the moment as it's much more humane for both the mice and my snake imo. :)
